Rugged Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) Sealing for Aluminum Chambers: Atlas CF Flanges TM open the door to the many valuable properties of aluminum UHV chambers by providing the rugged, industry standard ConFlat * (CF) stainless steel knife edge and face on an aluminum flange body.  Atlas CF Flanges are easily welded to aluminum vacuum chambers (visit our Aluminum Vacuum Welding Guide for more info). Aluminum Atlas CF Flanges are suitable for vacuum levels of 1x10^-13 Torr and may comfortably heat cycle to 250 ° C bake-out temperatures. Atlas CF Flanges are the key technology for successfully applying Aluminum in your ultra high vacuum (UHV) application.

Aluminum Atlas CF Flanges are used in prominent high vacuum (HV), ultra high vacuum (UHV), and extreme high vacuum (EHV) applications world wide. Aluminum Atlas CF Flanges are used by semiconductor fabrication OEMs where the superior heat conduction, chemical resistance, manufacturing ease and cost effectiveness aluminum vacuum systems translate directly to productivity, cost of ownership advantages.

In synchrotron and particle physics applications where magnetic permeability of the vacuum system disturb the beam quality, Aluminum Atlas CF Flanges are used vacuum systems world wide. Atlas CF Flanges enable aluminum non magnetic beam tubes, wigglers & undulators and drift tubes to be reliably sealed to ultra high vacuum (UHV).

In Neutron applications such as the production of medical radioisotopes for medical imaging, aluminum ultra high vacuum systems using aluminum Atlas CF Flanges are replacing all stainless steel vacuum systems. This is because the residual radiation induced by neutrons in aluminum has a half-life several orders of magnitude shorter than that of stainless steel. Aluminum Atlas CF Flanges enable the aluminum ultra high vacuum systems to be used in cyclotrons and nuclear reactors.

Knife Edge:

Stainless steel ConFlat standard. Atlas uses the CERN High Energy Physics type design CF Flange, which has of a standard ConFlat knife edge tip, face and gasket well location but has an additional 20 deg back bevel inside of the knife edge.  This design is more rugged & has excellent re-use and cryogenic cycle properties.

Gaskets:

Uses standard CF Flange – ConFlat Style Copper vacuum gaskets. Aluminum vacuum gaskets may also be used.

Thermal:

Peak temperature of bond at weld up: 300C for less than two minutes. Operational temperature: 0-250C. Special Cryogenic bimetallic transition CF Flange models are available contact us for details.

Welding:

Standard aluminum welding techniques, TIG is readily used Electron beam techniques can also be used.  Atlas also engineers and manufactures custom UHV aluminum assemblies to meet your requirements please contact us to discuss your project.

Cryogenic:

Ultra high vacuum (UHV) Cryogenic temperatures options are available upon request with the Atlas bimetallic transition model.

Atlas Explosive Bonding:

Atlas bonded bimetallic flanges use the Atlas explosive bonding process which is an enhancement of the traditional explosive bonding process. This explosive bonding (explosive welding) process combines high tensile and shear strengths while sustaining Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) hermetic quality bonds.

Mechanical:

The Atlas Explosive Bonding is rated at 15,000 PSI tensile and 10,000 shear strength.

Vacuum Testing:

All Atlas CF Flanges are vacuum qualified to 1 x 10^-9 CC He/ sec.
